Using and AMNPS in a masterbuilt 40 in propane

So I have completed my first smoke and it went alright , just a lot of temps true drop when adding new batches of wood chips. I was wonder if anyone had any tips on using AMNPS for the smoke and the propane burner for the heat. I have scoured the other threads and maybe I am over looking something , do I just set it on top of the chip pan and after starting it and run the smoker as normal?
