For those like me who still eat a rare steak now and then and who don't wash the grocery cart down with them silly little wash cloths this still has a little (OK) a Lot of info and precautions to follow.

Check out the "Cook it safe" on the USDA web site.

Thanks, Karl.

Pretty basic stuff for most of us here who are extra careful because of the type of cooking we do, but still important!

Karl, I do use the wipes now.  A study of shopping carts was done where 50% were found to be contaminated with fecal material.  Now I wipe the handle and fold up the "baby seat" where I am sure a lot of this "stuff" comes from.  LOL

Good luck and good smoking.

I notice a lot do use the wipes. I went to a buffet with my niece and great niece and the baby dropped a pc of food ont the table and picked it up to eat and my niece went balistic. It was well within the 5 sec rule.

And that is for the floor.  I even heard on the radio that the usda is telling people that the 5 sec. rule is a myth. Now if that is just not wrong i dont know what is. Cheese.

Oh well i am happy in my ignorance. I wont go in to the warnings i get on eating grilled or BBQ Meat.

I hate to say it but the 5 second rule is a myth...A fraction of a second in contact with a Bacterial laden surface is more than enough time for contamination.  But stuff happens...If you do drop something on the floor, the rules of Time-Temperature management become more critical to maintain safety. There is NO NEED to throw it out, just make a greater effort to keep it Cold or get it Hot, within 2-4 hours...In most cases the Floor is the Least of your Worries...How many of you have taken time to wash your hands with Antibacterial Soap, then dried them on the Dish towel that has been hanging by the sink for a week! How many have washed their hands, started preparing Dinner, then Sneezed, Coughed, Scratched an ichy nose or Pushed their Hair out of their eyes...In ALL these cases you contaminated your Hands and any Food you touch!  Worrying about it will make you Crazy...But having an understanding of how Safe Food Handling is done, will let you enjoy all those things that Taste So Good!...JJ

AAAhh for the good old day when one was living in ignorance. I started to read jimmy j post and then i just started saying over and over again LaaLaaLaaLaaLaaLaaLaa

and i put my fingers in my ears. Any one that grew up or was born before 2011 know that the 5 second rule rules.

If we are to clean we are sick.

Fact.

Dogs licking Ice cream cone = Healthier kids

Playing in sand box that cat just left. AAAHHH Maybe not.

Dirty is Healthy.

I guess being a young whippersnapper on the forum, just 52 :)  I tend to go the other way, though not to an extreme.  I remember growing up and eating all kinds of stuff :) playing in the mud on the river bank, kissing dogs or being licked for any leftover remnants of ice cream :0  I believe that as a society, we are so worried about germs that our immune systems have almost gone dormant when it comes to fighting off infections.  I get a cold once a year, flu maybe lasts 3 days and then I feel great.  I do wash my hands with anti bacterial soap before I touch any food but other then that, I dont worry about it.  Everything I cook is at a hot enough temp to kill any germs.  I do not take any pills, even aspirin, whatever gets too me is normally gone in a couple days.  Maybe I am just healthy or maybe its the yeast in the beer that wipes everything out :)

I gota agree with LarryM on this.  I am a phone repairman, in and out of some houses that I wouldn't let my dog live in, I do wash before I eat but not with antibacterial soap, I am much healthier than my wife who goes to the extremes the other way.  Society is keeping our immune systems from doing the job it was designed to do.

I have only been around for 64 years, so it could be that I just haven't made it to the point of being that careful.
