U D S Grease clean out

How do you get the grease out of the bottom of a UDS. Also should the ash pan be off the bottom of drum a inch or more so not in the grease. TK's just trying to clean up  BROOMER

I have never had a problem with grease build up for large pieces I use a drip pan above the fire so I can catch the drippings for use. My ash pan is on the bottom. 

I see this is your first post. When you get a chance will you drop by roll call so everyone can give you a proper SMF welcome?

I was useing my small square 8" x 8" x 8" with 2" feet fire basket knowing it would be a short cook I had built for my reworked Brinkman to clone UDS that works better now that it is reworked. In my just built 45 gallon UDS I did not use a drip pan for I wanted the drippings to drip onto the fire for flavor and moisture. Did turkey wings day before on outer edge of grate for cooler there as to center and grease dripped to the bottom of drum.Yes need a bigger ash pan still on the drawing board as to what size and how to build it.

What i did was used a spare UDS lid and took a jig saw and removed the outter ring, then i used bent up the edges all the way around and put a hook on it to lift it off the bottom.

I wanted something to cover most of the bottom and get ash as well as grease....its worked phenomenol. Sorry my computer is down so no pic.

I don't like the idea of having a pan under the basket so i can have the best airflow..plus why have two pans anyway,one for ash and one for grease?

I have an 18" pizza pan that I use to catch ash and grease. It is not quite big enough and I still get grease on the bottom when I have a full rack. So far the only method I have found to clean it is to lean down in the drum with a handful of paper towels. It is not a pleasant experience.

I drilled a small hole in the center of the bottom of mine so any grease and condensation buid up drains while cooking. Works like a charm

That is one of those "how did I not think of that sooner" items. It is so simple yet probably works perfectly. Looks like I will be doing a little drilling this weekend.
