I know they are cheap on the West Coast. They are hard to find here but I went to a store that always has them. Untrimmed tri tip was 9.99 a lb. Anywhere from 30 sum bucks to over 50.

That's the price I find around here (MN) too. They usually on the small side, but not something I purchase. Wife does not like that much moo and I can find cheaper cuts to braise or grind.I know they are cheap on the West Coast. They are hard to find here but I went to a store that always has them. Now Florida is another story. I get them at Costco Business Center in Orlando. Price has roller coaster ridden from $4 to $6 but was under $5 before we migrated.
Don't remember the size, but I roper doped Brian (@bmudd14474 ) into prepping and smoking a couple for the Florida gathering last year.
Outside of the west coast Tri-Tip isn't know as much so its a novelty/specialty cut so they charge a premium for them. Sadly people pay for it.I'VE BEEN COOKING TRITIP ON A KETTLE FOR OVER 45 YEARS NOW. ONCE YOU TRIM THE FAT OFF A FOUR POUND TRITIP IT'S A POUND LIGHTER, AND THERE'S STILL SOME FAT LEFT ON. I USED TO BUY BAGS OF 4-5 TRITIPS UNTRIMMED FOR $1.99LB, THESE DAYS I BUY TRIMMED WHEN ON SALE, NEVER SPENT MORE THAN $4.99LB. I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE WHY THEY GO FOR SO MUCH MORE MONEY THAN THEY DO IN CA AND AZ. HELL, I GRIND TRI FOR BURGERS THE LAST FEW TIMES INSTEAD OF BRISKET, THO IT SEEMS ALL MEAT COSTS A BUCK OR TWO A POUND MORE THAN IT DID SIX MONTHS AGO.
