I am a full time RVer and have been eyeing a Traeger PTG Grill to take with me for using on the road. Has anyone purchased one and if so how good are they? Also I was concerned about the size for transporting. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it. I currently have a gas (small propane cylinder) fuel but with the stand and extra fuel takes up space which is golden. Thanks..Jay

I don't own one, but I've never really read anything positive about them. You can search this forum as well as pelletheads.com and find reviews - several regular contributors own or have owned them.

I think you'd be much better off with the RecTec Mini or the GMG Davey Crocket. I know lots of RV'ers own those.

Just some added info..

I purchased a Davy Crockett for home, Like it also, but it is larger, taller, and is heavy for one person to toss it in and out of an RV on a regular basis.

The PTG fits into the front belly storage easily and we then just carry a smaller bag of pellets or just toss them in a plastic container of some type for storage.  We use a 'folding' aluminum table to set it on when using.  The table folds up into the same size 'bag' as a collapsible camping chair.

It's a trade off of convenience and features.

The DC - Slightly bigger surface area for cooking, WIFI control on most(if wanted), better heat control, bigger, taller body, heavier and bulkier, choice of power - is 12 volt, comes with 120v ac adapter and additional hookups for 12v.

The PTG - Smaller, rectangular footprint, lid latches, I believe it is only 12 or 14 inches tall, lighter to carry. 120v only - need to use an inverter or small generator for boondocking. For weekending etc.. the PTG fits our needs nicely.

These units use very little power - just enough for the electronics and combustion fan mostly, and just a little more at start for a few minutes for run the 'hot rod' to ignite the pellets.

There is pros and cons to any unit out there.. Just get what you think will work for you and enjoy..

Hope this quick comparison helps..

I have a GMG DC. Lots of folks here have the PTG'S, BUT the temp control is awful. The head room is about 4 inches so any thing taller than a flat chicken, a rack of ribs won't fit. The DC is about 60lbs. I put it in the front area of my 5th wheel. Way better temp control on the DC.

Do yourself a HUGE favor avoid the TRAEGER PTG, I have gone through HE11 with one I bought for the RV. I have ruined expensive ribs, chicken and a few steaks, good luck getting it to smoke without taking off from 160 degrees to 475 within 5 minutes, temp control is TERRIBLE. The will be VERY nice folks when you call them, however, they do not stand behind the product and will not replace the unit. They will keep sending you CHINESE PARTS until you give up and go away. The larger very expensive units have different controlers and have been told they work fine, my friend is on his 3rd controller in 3 months, I am on my second one in a week. Have not got the thing to stay lit on smoke after 15 attempts with 3 of them with a rep on the phone, SPEND YOUR MONEY TAKE YOUR CHANCES! When I asked them to send me a new grill after 4 days because it was warped from 3 out of control fires they said, NO! Nice people trained to make you feel like the problem with their junk is really because you cannot read english.
