Man can't believe flour so hard to get. I am out of Sourdough and flour to make! Weekend breakfast just not going to be the same! Stopped Market Street on way home and they said got some in today but gone all ready.

yeah, i'm not sure what people are doing with all the flour, i'm a meatcutter with a local chain here and the other day a little old lady came up to me and asked if I knew if we had flour so I told her where it was and she said she didn't see any there so thinking she was in the wrong isle I walked down myself to get it for her and to my surprise the whole section was empty. I didn't realize flour was as popular as toilet paper. crazy times!

I tried a sourdough using all purpose flour last week and did not like. Might work for french toast.

Strech one of your wifes nylon stalkings over asquare frame made out of a wire coat hanger. Mix Flour and water paste and spread it thinly over your nylon. Allow it to dry for 36-48hrs and you have diy TP.

I might have made this up. Not saying it won't work... but not saying that it will either.

It's weird that the bread aisle is fully stocked, but all the flour is gone. I took a 3-4 month break from baking bread due my focus being elsewhere. Thankfully, I'd bought another jar of yeast last fall. We had almost 5 lbs of whole wheat flour in the cabinet, almost 10 lbs of AP there, too, and I found a 5 to 10 year old 5 lb sealed bag of whole wheat flour buried in the freezer I didn't know I had. Flour in a freezer keeps forever, so no worries.

All flour has natural yeasts so it isn't an absolute necessity for some breads, especially the rustic ones. Takes more time, but less kneading. Do a little research.

At our local markets the normal 10lb bags of flour are sold out but the bakery in the store will sell you a 10lb bag of their bulk flour at for $3 to $4.00 depending on the type of flour. So it might be worth a try to ask if this can be done in your local store or bakery. From what I was told is there is no flour or yeast shortage just shortages on the packaging so you might see more stores offering flour, yeast and sugar in plain bulk plastic bags in the near future. Some stores out here are already selling it that way., I guess it was supplies that were normally sold to restaurants and bakeries that haven't been buying it in bulk lately.

In the meantime if you have or can find wheat gluten you can add one heaping table spoon to each cup of AP flour to turn it into bread flour, just remember to take out the same amount of the AP flour so your recipes stay consistent.

A local restaurant that has been ordered shut as per Corvid-19 protocols is taking orders via email for grocery orders. We live in a small town with only one grocery store so this will take some of the pressure off the one grocery store in town. We are due to pickup our first order today of yeast, flour and brown sugar. Between their takeout and grocery supply business they are able to keep their head above water. I’m thinking other restaurants might be doing the same especially in small towns.

Winco, a west coast grocer, is open from 6 AM to 7:30 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays for seniors, high risk folks, and employees to shop. I fit the first two requirements so that's when I go. Made a trip this morning.

Their baking section is great. And when I go they are usually about half stocked with 5 lb bags of AP and whole wheat flour. I didn't need any yeast so I forgot to look to see if they had any. I did pick up a big container of baking powder last week as we were almost out. Previously they did not have any.

I found two packs of 10-lb bags a Costco.

Yes I made a run for it. very successful venture. 3 briskets, couple eyes, couple TTs, lots of drumsticks and thighs, BBs, loins, flour, sugar, and random other stuff. uhh yeah - im ready for spring now!

Sandy, that was quite shopping for you! You are stocked for some time... I am getting jealous now.... The wife won't let me get out of our hose for any reason... one only option left for me -backyard.... :emoji_disappointed:

In addition to no flour, TP, or paper towels, we have no dried legumes. The legumes I understand: many of my survivalist/prepper friends have 10# bags (or more) that they keep on hand, often in vacuum canisters.

But as millions of people keep asking: why did everyone start hoarding TP???

I'm not far from you if I remember correctly I live on the banks of the CA Delta.
If you are looking for beans, I'd start with the many Mexican stores in the East Bay area, they are loaded from 5lb bags to 25 lb bags.
Good luck.

I give up for now. Been checking on line and made couple calls. They say as soon as it hits the shelf's its gone. Bought some bread. I only eat it on the weekends with breakfast and love my sourdough.

Odd how things are changing. I finally tried the seniors, etc. times at Meijer (7 to 9 Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mondays and Wednesdays for healthcare workers and first responders). I found everything I wanted except white bread flour, but they had pallets full of AP flour.
I even got the last 4 pack of paper towels!!!
Plenty of bread, eggs, dairy and fresh produce. The meat section was even well stocked.
I'll look for wheat gluten next Thursday.

I went to Costco today here on the Monterey (CA) peninsula. Pretty much everything (TP and paper towels) were back in stock. Traffic around here is light, but we're certainly not a ghost town, like other places. Except for the mask, distancing, and metering traffic in/out of the big store (oh yes, no free food samples), the drive there and the shopping experience wasn't too different from normal.

I'm adapting. Have to, because our gov ain't gonna open anything up for a long time.
