I own a Smoke Hollow 30166E. I am not particularly fond of the smoker, it seems to me it just doesn't make enough smoke. It makes me feel like I have an oven to use outside that occasionally puts out some smoke. I have read some posts around here and have made some modifications to the chip box and now use my water pan as a chip box as well and still it does not really makes very little smoke. I am thinking about getting a new one but I'm not to sure if I should get another electric one or jump to a gas smoker.

It may be smoking does the food taste? you don't want a heavy smoke that makes for bad Q  wait and try your Q the next day after you smoke it because you become immune to the aroma of the smoker while you are smoking. If you need more falvor or want more flavor smoke with chunks of hickory and put one on every hour you smoke and that should be enough.

if you really want another smoker i would recommend a WSM(Weber Smokey Mountain). 3-4 hundred bucks and throw in some charcoal and a few wood chunks and smoke to your hearts content and make great food. I know a lot of people like their MES which is fine I'm not a fan of Electric smokers but to each their own. If you go electric you could throw in an AMNPS and add smoke flavor with the pellets. i have seen excellent food come out of that setup.

Do a search for WSM on the forums here and take a hard look at it its great smoker!

    Hope this helps,

I have to agree with Aaron.

For the $ it's very hard to beat a WSM.

    I have 3 of them.

Go to any BBQ comp & you will see them being used by some of the teams.

  4. The WSM is the only smoker I've ever owned, so my opinion is based on ignorance. :)

But I really like my WSM. Easy to control the temps, it's a no brainer. It has produced some very good ribs, some excellent pulled pork and my favorite EXCELLENT smoked chicken.
  5. For me I like the flavor combo that charcoal and wood gives to the food. While I don't own a WSM myself it is one I am likely going to by at some point. Don't think you could go wrong with that choice.

I've never used an electric but I smoked on a gasser for a few years and turned some great bbq. That said, I much prefer my WSM. Doubles as a pretty decent grill as well. I'm grilling dogs on it as we speak.

A lot of people here use electric and put out some awesome food, but have to use an AMPNS for smoke. I used an MB gasser for a couple of years and loved it, but it has it's own shortcomings, like keeping temps low. I picked up an offset stick burner this year and am having a ball with it, but I still use the MB with a mailbox/hotplate/AMNPS to do sausage & cheese.
From what I've read, If you're going with charcoal/wood and want one smoker, a WSM is the way to go.
I'd like to have one, but patio space and marital bliss would suffer 😊

Yeah, I've got a MES 30 with an AMNPS and love it.  If I could ever talk Miss Linda into believing that we NEED another smoker, it would be a WSM.
