I have to thermometers I need to drill holes for in my master forge dual door.  As everyone knows the stock thermometer on these sucks.  I have 2 of them with 2.5 inch stems and figure one at the top and one at the bottom...

Where should I put them in relation to the grates?  Should they be just above the grate or just above the grate?  Don't want to drill out holes and find out I should have been above or below.  What do you guys suggest?

If your meat is on the grate I think I would want to know what the temp is at that level. If you adjust your shelves they won't be where you want them anyway. I usually clamp the probe to my Mav on the shelf I'm cooking on. If I have a full smoker I place it on the middle shelf to get an "average" temp. Be sure to check them for accuracy before drilling your smoker up.

I just run my probe wires thru the gap between the hinges. My rack configuration seems to change with every smoke so I'm constantly moving the smoker temp probe to get readings where the meat is.

Thanks... thats were I placed them and I drilled a few more holes for hanging
