I would like to propose to Jeff an idea for another subject category in the threads list and possibly calling it "The Workbench". This could be an area that we post for example -

- My pickup is not running smoothly in low rpm's, any idea what the problem might be?

- My smoker is charcoal and I can not get the temperature up to 250º, what can I do?

- The central air in my house is blowing warm air, what should I check for?

The reason I thought this would be a good category is with all the great knowledgeable members here have tons of experience in many different fields and we could probably help each other out with more than just smoking, and that is what family's do.

My issue is for a few years I have been wanting to make my home made #32 meat grinder that is belt driven by a 3/4 horse 1725 rpm electric motor a direct drive instead of belt driven. I have been looking for an inexpensive 20 to 1 speed reducer or a gear reduction system and am having a problem finding one that is fairly inexpensive. I have watched eBay on and off for a few years and have yet to find what I am looking for. I have been told this speed reducer is common in conveyor belt systems. If anyone has an idea of where else I can look or knows of one available, I would really appreciate the information.

Mossy that sounds great to me.

You may need to look for a gearmotor, or a "c" faced motor gear box assembly or make a shield for your pully/belt arrangement

Hey Marty, would a gearhead motor work? My brother might have one at the peat moss plant, it would be either 220 or 440, and heavy, let me know what you need, by email, and I will take a look.

I do not need a motor, my meat grinder is allready set up with a 3/4 horse 220 volt motor that spins at 1725 rpm's that I currently have a belt drive hooked up to and with the size of the pulley combinations on it have the grinder wound down ot about 85 rpm's.

I am looking for a 20 to 1 gear reduction speed reducer that will turn the grinder at 85 to 90 rpm's.; as that is what Hobart recommends for meat grinding.

If it is a motor with a speed reducer attached that will spin at those speed I may be interested. I have also been thinking about a variable speed workout tread mill's motor and set up may work out pretty good cause it would be adjustable for grinder speed?

My current pulley grinder works great, just looking to improve it with direct drive; I am always looking to upgrade !!!

I guess I'd try a DC winch-type motor. Like on vehicles. I bought one that I have rigged between 2 rafters of my garage that I use for raising and lowering stuff. Guess I don't know typical ratios of 'em tho. Or even an older power drill, some of the hi-torque models have such gear boxes. I'm setting up a motor and a gearbox off the original "Power screwdriver"...110 powered, old...gotta be 40 years old.. to "motorize the Enterprise" sausage stuffer.

You could tye a reo-stat or SCR into the motor circuit,, but if your motor is not designed for this it could be trouble, a VFD is not practicle, price will have you buying a new grinder instead of the drive.
