For a femoral artery bleed a tourniquet is your only immediate defense.
Son is Army Combat Medic and tourniquet is top of the kit.
I would think the magic powder is better for superficial heavy bleeders such as scalp. Generally pressure is the easiest for the superficial.

Interesting! My wife's great uncle cut his femoral artery, several years ago...he also didn't have much blood left by the time his son drove him 15 miles to the hospital!
