The BEST Thread...Not THE best thread, just a thread about "THE BEST"

Mauser, The issue is not really about opinions. There are guys that will tell you that Blue has never been the best color and then ridicule you openly for thinking so. Going into detail about how totally wrong you are and then ramble on about Red being the ONLY color worth investing your time in and attempting to put you in your place while convincing other readers to only consider Red as the color of choice.

Voicing your opinion is fine bashing others for their choices or opinions is not polite...JJ

Well, if I think something is "THE BEST", then it is absolutely "THE BEST" for me  Why should that upset you?  If I think that blue is "THE BES.T" color, and you do not agree, then that is cool.  But why do you want to get upset that I have a different preference than you?  Just shake your head and think how dumb I am in your eyes, but then move on.  This world has plenty of room for my best AND your best.

Smoke on, and be cool to others.
Looks like I need to find a wordsmith forum. I'm a lot worse than I thought.

I don't give a rat's behind who likes what or how, that's their business.

I'm not upset and didn't start this thread for my own sake.

I guess one could presume that I have a dislike towards force-fed arrogance, whether it's on my plate or someone else's.

This IS the best thread! It actually sums up what I've had rattling around in my head for the last few weeks. Seems like anytime someone posts something about BBQ on the interwebs someone else feels obligated to come along and educate them on the Best(only) way to do it right. Personally, I think there is very little right or wrong in BBQ. There are different styles, methods and traditions and they all yield great food. Whether it's alright, good, or freaking phenomenal is often based on highly subjective factors such as personal taste or expectations. So, chest thumping about how anything should or should not seems pointless. Of course, I haven't seen too much of that here which is probably why I joined.

This is a great discussion, Joe...thanks for starting it!

To borrow Lance's term, I believe that chest thumping, as well as the rude arrogance, and stubborn narrow-mindedness already discussed, are less common here than they are at other forums I frequent.  It's certainly one of the things I love about these forums.  That's not to say that SMF is totally immune to that attitude and behavior...but it usually seems to be the exception rather than the rule, at least in my experience.

What I see more often here at SMF, and what I always try to do myself, is members being positive, encouraging, and appreciative of fellow members' techniques.  There is a general appreciation here that there are many ways to accomplish great BBQ.  For the most part, the only time differing methods are suggested is when the OP ASKS for input or advice.  Again, this is not ALWAYS true here, but is true more times than not.  I certainly hope I've never been so presumptuous as to force my way of doing it on someone else when they didn't ask for advice.  What I view as "Best" for me is certainly not the ONLY way, nor necessarily the Best way for anyone else.

I definitely agree with Joe...it can be very tiresome to have someone insist that your way is wrong and their way is right.

Oh, and BTW JJ and Mauser...RED IS ALWAYS THE BEST COLOR!

All I can contribute to this is that I believe that nothing can ever be the best.  Maybe the best thing you had to that point but as people who cook as a hobby that best should be changing.  I used to never foil anything because I like the texture of the bark, then one day I got tired of never foiling and I foiled and I like the texture of that too...it was a nice change. Now I do whatever suits my mood or convenience.   Even if something was hypothetically the best, wouldn't you get bored of it if you only had it that way.  Same goes for cookers..admittedly it is hard for me to choose the best since I have about 14  (I wouldn't want them fighting for my love and attention).  But I used them all for different things.  If  I really nail one protein on one cooker, I think, can I try it on a different one and see if its better?  Variety and experimenting is the joy of food and cooking.  So in other words, I wholeheartedly support this thread and all it stands for! Even enough to give it POINTS!!

Okay...

I'm not perfect, and once again made a mistake by starting this thread. Slow learner I guess.
I should have been in bed sleeping as I was too tired to be posting

Lots of people like FOB ribs. The ones that like a little tug shouldn't be "suggesting" that somehow, those folks don't know what they're doing or they're eating mush, etc.
The funny thing is, I've never seen people who enjoy FOB ribs communicate their preference to others in that fashion. I wonder why that is?
How many different ways can a chicken be smoked/cooked? Many. So why is one's preference/style/technique the best, "suggesting" to others that somehow their way is inadequate.
Many folks like smoking low-n-slow, lately it seems like that too is somehow the wrong way of doing things.
I could go on, but at this point I'm done.

I say do as you wish, but play nice with others.

No I'm not with the etiquette :police2:  but, I have noticed some of the egos are soaring high.

I have run into people that think FOB ribs are the only way to go and if they aren't FOB they are not cooked right. I asked them why they like them that way and they said it was how they had them in a high end restaurant (not a bbq place) and believed that was how all good cooks would have them done.

Me, I like em with a bit of tug but I have had some FOB that had outstanding flavor and tasted so good, I did not care. Lots of people try to hit you with absolutes. People tend to think a particular way is the best for some reason or another but it is all just personal preference. I think you have gotten a great discussion topic going. It gives people some things to think about.

For starting this thread. We all have changed our way of smoking, grilling and just plain BBQing. why because we belong to this great web forum and we accept the recommendations of our fellow members to at least try and change what we do or how we are doing it. If everything was the best there would be no room for change and we would all be totally bored with the same old thing all the time. Yes there is a lot of personal preference in what we do that's why we have charcoal, wood fired, gasser's and electric and many of us have different types for doing the different ways that we do our best until we change it by someone's suggestion.  Where else are you going to get the info and help that you get from this SMF great group of guys and gals. We share in the happiness and sorrels and the ribbing for the mistakes we make. Where else are you going to make the friends that we have on here from ocean to ocean and north to south as well as abroad and most are not face to face known but we feel they are the greatest. Again these are my opinions and I'm not asking anyone to change anything I think you are great just the way you are.

This post is the BEST!  LOL

Right on brother Red. Those that hang around get that this is a wonderful place to be. Many forums claim to be a community, but this is  a real community.  Ya know I fly to some city every week. Too many nights in the hotel rooms... reading these posts keep me grounded.  It's like Mayberry with better food!

Point to you my gravity feed smoker pal!
