Gus,I don't think many people use them on here. Most people such as myself are only interested in internal temperature.Internal temperature is the proper way to measure meat temperatures for safety reasons.

Hi everyone

Thermoworks is running a sale on their infrared thermometers (http://www.thermoworks.com/Infrareds) and I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation or experience with the different models they offer?

Appreciate the help

Gus
In the kitchen I use the IR gun on my cast iron skillet to check the surface temp for searing. It goes to 962*F or so. I got mine at Harbor Freight for $25.00 or so. Menards has one on sale for $10.00 but may not go that high. Point it at the inside of your fridge, the outside of your smoker to find hot spots, rotors on your car to see if brakes are dragging, windows and walls, ceiling, inside registers for a/c temp. It's nice to have handy.

Thanks

My interest is along the lines of the dr's - checking surface temps and finding hot spots. It seems like you can pay anything from $10 to $100s for these things and I'm trying to understand what you really get by paying more.

Some have no laser, 1, 2 or circle. The the distance ratio. Mine's 8:1 so it reads a 1" area 8" away. High end IR therms may not need to be acclimated to the ambiant temp you uzsing it in. Like in a warehouse freezer mine should be in that environment for a half hour before using it to maximize it's accuracy. Not so much outside in the summer since it's closer to indoor ambiant temperature. The most inexpensive Thermoworks gun should be fine.

My $20 harbor freight has the laser. Works fine. Can’t see a need for more. Bought it to check trailer hub temps.
