having temp. control problems could too many coals be a problem or is it all air control?

yes, it could be to many coals fired off at one time. But, a little more info would be useful.....what type of smoker, how are your vents set etc....no one will know what you're up against

brinkmann trailmaster limited my vents are fully open on top vent and 1/2 closed on side vent

I used the Brinkmann ECB for years and had no control over air intake. Full open on top to let stale smoke out makes sense. You might try closing the bottom vents more to restrict air intake. If you started with a full load of coals and lit them all at once it 's bound to run hot until they start to burn down. Most guys will load a chimney full of lit coals on top of unlit coals...allowing the others to catch on gradually. Check out the Minnion Method....http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/forum/thread/85924/the-minion-method-explained-w-tutorial
