Temperature issues.

I just built my first electric smoker and i am excited to start smokin', but i am having issues getting the temperature hot enough. I can't seem to get the temp above 150. My element is 1000w, so it should be getting hotter than that. I heard somewhere that if you use a long extension cord you will wattage, but im not sure if that is true. I am thinking of buying a new hot plate or a element for a smoker,but i thought i would ask and see if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!

Welcome to SMF and yes the extension cord can effect the hot plate if the cord is not heavy enough for the length your running or the load the hot plate requires

Welcome to the SMF BnB!  As Piney stated, the longer the cord the less power available to the device especially with smaller gauge wire (14 gauge).  The best solution is (if at all possible) to move the smoker as close to the power source as possible and then, if you even need an extension cord, use a shorter, heavier gauge (10 gauge is my choice) to carry the load.
