Well, I ran into something a few weeks ago that I never guessed would have been a problem. I have completely lost my sense of taste and smell and I am having a really hard time with it.

So three weeks ago I had a viral sinus infection. At the time I didn't know it was viral, thought it was just a head cold. It laid me up for 2 days. Felt like I had a truck parked on my head the whole time. I was taking the usual over the counter meds / head clearers as prescribed. The second day it cleared up, but my taste and smell were gone. I thought it would come back. It has not.

I went to see a spe******t last week and he was really concerned. He put me on a huge dose of steroids and some other stuff. The meds are gone and still no improvement. I am scheduled to have a CT scan next week. This problem is common in older folks or those that smoke. I am 33 and a nonsmoker. Guess I am just lucky.

At his point I cannot differentiate between a dog turd and a candy bar. I can't taste or smell anything. No mouthwash, vinegar... nothing. I can tell if something is sweet, sour, salty or hot. Thats it. I got nothin else.

I was reading about the problem online and it is more common then I thought. It turns out that only 18% of people with this problem will make even a small improvement and that could take years. I am still hoping that I will just wake up one morning and everything will be normal again. It has been almost a month though and I am getting discouraged.

So I have a new UDS that is only a couple of months old and I have no desire to fire it up. I have stopped cooking all together and have been eating anything that just feels good texture wise.

The good news is that it wasn't caused by a brain tumor or some other life taker and let's be honest, if someone put a gun to your head and said that you had to give up two of your five senses which would you choose? I have also lost some weight.

I hope that things improve. Hope I dont have to live this way forever.

Get well soon!

I have heard of this before but never really looked into it. My prayers are that you have a complete and speedy recovery!

Big E,
I've been like this for years, 1 1/2 ago had throat surgery to open up the airway and it's helped with some things, still have sleep apnea. But my sense of smell and hearing came back on my left side. Still get stuffy, lots of clear runny junk. Way too many tests last month, good news is lot's of stuff I don't have, bad news Dr still not quite sure.

Have been using a nasal rinse since begining of the year, and it's been a huge relief. I get feeling better and skip an evening or morning rinse, and feel crappy the next day. I make sure to not skip again. Best $10 I've spent in a long time.

Wish my Dr had recommened it years ago.
Hoping for the best,

I use one of those for a sinus allergy. Takes some getting used to, but it's great.

Hope things clear up quick..

Very very sorry about your recent affliction, we all hope it returns quickly and completely!

The good thing is, I now know who I can get to test my Q without making a face!

(Just trying to cheer ya up! lol!)

I am realy sorry to hear that. I could not even imagine what that would be like.

But take solice in that good que is a journey and not a destination.
enjoy making the que, sitting with a cold drink, and watching the smoke rise. and doesn't good que feel nice in the mouth?

revel in those aspects and good luck, I hope you recover soon!

Thanks for the kind words from everyone.

Oh yea Neilmed and I are great friends. I started with the rinse about 6mos ago and that stuff is great. Opens up everything really nice. I also have the APNEA and boy does the wife love sleeping with Darth Vader.

I think my problem is that the nerves responsible for smelling have been damaged due to the inflamation during the infection. The whole thing happened to fast that I didnt think it was a big deal.

I'm just going day by day at this point. Sounds kind of funny talking about it this way. I mean hell, i'm not dying or anything its just really depressing. Life will go on and there is a lot of people worse off. It's just a really wierd thing to be dealing with.

I can still smoke the things I am familiar with, butts, ribs and the like, but any new recipies are out of the question. Cant taste them to judge if they are good or not.
