Yes, I got a bag at their company store. They're good. Soak them and the water picks up some red color. I got chunks, so if you got chips that's a different product.

The bag was only $5 which seemed strange given how expensive everything else was.

It's oak, but I didn't notice very much pepper aroma.

BTW Avery Island isn't really an island, it's a salt dome. There are beds of salt, and they're lighter than the sediments around them, so they rise as domes of salt. Oil comes up along the edges.

They keep a close eye on that place, you can't just wander around the property. Their "factory tour" is just a viewing of part of their packing line. Their real production is under wraps. They have that store, and a bit of an amusement park. It's worth visiting if you're nearby.

Well, you can get an actual "baton rouge" which is a red stick. Tradition says the overseer carried one to compare that painted stick vs. the color of the ripening pods. If they weren't ripe enough to match that red, they weren't picked.

Yes, I've used them before and I like them. It's not going to overpower your food or make it taste like you dumped a bottle of sauce on it. Nice smoky flavor.
