Starting Seeds For Salad Items

i started my cherry tomatoe and green pepper seeds on valentines day.

3 seeds in 1 peat pellets each.
i will do this weekly until about tax day..april 15.

on st.patricks day [march 17] i put 2 outside. [1 each]
i will do this every week also...

this is a back up in case there is a hard freeze.
in the st.louis area you are usually safe from freezing
after tax time

i will end up with 3 plants each ,,in 5 gallon buckets.
thats a total of 6 buckets.

i have some compact flourescent grow lights for indoor propagation.

Now that sound like a plan for a small garden...

I am thinking of the same idea for here. The ground here is so terrible, weeds hardly grow in it... let alone grass.

In fact the wife and I was talking about it just the other night. Possibly tomatoes, peppers, who know what else. Not too many though.

I am even thinking of a few herbs in one of them rectangular pots.

Don't forget to keep the grow lights close or the plants will get tall and spindley.

Also ... It's a good idea (albeit a PITA) to bring your plants outside for a few hours a day just before planting time to get them used to wind and cooler temps.

the cherry tomatoes seem to do well in 5 gallon buckets.
with regular tomatoes--[big boy-jet star-beef steak]
my results ,at best,
was only fair........maybe its me---last years was pitiful...
so much so that i will put the regular plants in ground this year.
the apartments land only goes about 12 feetout back door...
then starts lot that has been vacant for many years.
i will try 4 plants in ground --about 2 feet inside the vacant lot

i use the compact flourescent.
along with the cheezy utility clamp lamps
they are really easy to use in small space for propagation--

the afternoon sun BOOMS in the bedroom window..
so daily, all of my plantlets will see about 3 hrs sun.
along with 15 hrs grow light at 6400 kelvins [daybrite]
they will get a bit of fan to blow on them --gently-
and rotated 90 degrees every day
you can easily keep them at 2 inches above the plantlets

. We are going to start our salad greens outside this week. I'm going to grow them in long plastic planters (2) for portability.
Cant wait to have some baby lettuce and spinach for fresh salads. I've also thought about some radishes but haven't decided yet. We have too many pets to start things inside so I usually buy my veggie/ herb plants when it gets warmer. Good growing

Hey Mr Grumpy,
I used to live on Topsail Island (man do I miss it) and I managed to grow some tomatoes and peppers underneath the stairs to the door.(house on stilts) Obviously the soil was all sand, so I just took a square aread and mixed in some peat moss, fertilizer and manure. It was still a very sandy soil, but the plants really grew well. I think they liked the beach too!!

I don't know if you have ever used them, but a wallowater works very well in the early spring. Thats if you decide to transplant them to a garden.

You are such a good plantlet daddy! Most people forget to adjust the lights or turn the babies so they don't stretch their tiny necks looking for it.
