My drum doesn't have a 2" bung in it, so I need to drill for exhaust.  I was going to put 4 x 3/4 nipples in, like the intakes - would this be too much?

4 isn't enough. I started with 4 and ended up with 8.

If you put the 8 holes on the sides of the drum, near the top, rain etc. won't get into it...

I was going to use the pipe nipples so I could thread on a cap when not in use - for the rain.

8 x 3/4 or 1/2?

Think about using corks.... corks from the hardware store.... cheap and easy... I would drill 1" holes.... smokers need to breathe.... lack of air flow causes acrid tasting food...
