Smoker Placement

OK, just got my first smoker a Smokey Mountain gas unit.
Would it be a no-no to set it up on my carpeted deck?
If not could I put some flat paving bricks under it?
I live in a mobile home and outdoor space is limited.

It probably won't get hot enough to cause any problems, but it wouldn't hurt to have something down there just in case.

If it were me, I'd put the paver stones down. Being that it's a propane unit, you're not likely to have sparks flying out, but I tend to err on the safe side.

i have a wood stove in my shed... on a wooden floor... I put down 2'x2' pavers that look like brick... they were pretty cheap... like 4-8 bucks each or something at Home Depot... I know there are mats out there to put under grills on decks... some of them are decorative....

i have read here where some have a problem with fat melting, and running down the legs.......staining the deck/patio..........so you mite want to watch that

the composite/cement backer board that we use for inderlayment of tile works good and will not catch fire, and is fairly cheap. I think they are 4x4.

WD is right, you will have fat dripping out the bottom sometimes. I put a card board box under mine, that absorbs what little fat drips out of your smoker. Welcome to the SMF.

Yep. Safty first. The cement board seems like a clever idea. Now you may want to raise that off of the carpet a bit to avoid trapping moisture under the cement board and ruining your carpet and maybe rotting your deck in the looooooong run. And as mentioned above, there are commericialy made "grill mats" and this time of year can be a good time to save $$$$ on grilling accessories but the hunt is a little tougher.

I would agree with that. The Charcoal versions were banned from many Apartments here in Florida, too many people setting their decks on fire.
Even some hot fat may cause some problems or at the very lease stain things.

Definitely put something under it. There are many times when food juices, grease, sauce erc. will drip when you are putting food in or taking it out.

A friend of mine picked up a GOSM (cuz he liked mine

)

He took a 4X5 wood pallet (whick allows air circulation between the deck and his smoking platform) to which he attached a 4X5 section of exterior grade plywood and then screwed down a couple of sections of cement backer-board. He then laid down paver stones on top of the cement board. His GOSM sits to the rear of the platform so when he pulls the racks out, the dripping fall on the stones and not the decking. The paver stones then get a good "power washing" from his 2 Labs. You can say that he over-engineered the thing and he'll agree, but that's how he does things.

My set up is a wheeled platform so I can move it when necessary. When I have it positioned where I want it, I then place my grilling mat down to catch any drippings. My son made the suggestion of fasting the grill mat to a section of plywood to: a) keep the wind from blowing it away: and b) to keep my small Beagle pack from dragging it off. A project that I'll get around to doing sometime before Spring!!
