i was wondering if t was possible to smoke sugar? i was thinking i could use this in my sweet tea to add a smoky flavor.  i assume as long as it's less then the melting point this should be possible.  Right?

i guess i would need to put it in something that'll hold the sugar in that is permeable...maybe cheese cloth?

    has anyone tried this?

Im sure you can do it but need to keep temps down or use something like the AMNPS

LOL sugar is 1 thing I have not even though about smoking. interesting idea. I don't see why you couldn't do it like I do salt. Put it on a pie tin and stir it every once in while.

pie tin is a good idea and i have no clue where to find a cheese cloth so that'll work!

i'm gonna try it this weekend. i read that the avg melting point of sugar is 160 so i'll try to keep it low for a couple hours and see!

You should be able to do it in the pie tin or even on a double layer of heavy duty foil. Not sure what the cheese cloth would do for you but most grocers have them in the section where they keep things like thermos and cooking equipment.

Let us know how it turns out. Might be an idea to add some sugar in the raw - you could also use it in your rub

i was thinking the cheese cloth would allow for more smoke to penetrate the smoke

I think if it was me I would just lay it out on a tin foil pan and smoke it - the cheesecloth might absorb the smoke and keep it from the sugar
