Good Morning, new to the forum, have had my Camp Chef DLX for a few months. It only "puffs" smoke out on start up. For the rest of the cook it holds temps fine and cooks fine, but it wont "puff and bellow" at all. I compare it to my dads unit, he has the same camp chef and during his cook cycle it will "puff" smoke about every 15 to 20 minutes and it smokes for up to 5 minutes at a time.

Is this a poor choice I have made in pellet selection? Could it be that simple? My dad and i don't use the same brand pellets.

Can't help you with a pellet pooper question but I can welcome you to the forum. For sure you will receive some help with your question. There are a lot of great guys and gals on here with tons of info.

Thanks for the welcome, I've been a lurker for a while now. Decided to join up, hopefully i will have some info to contribute one of these days too.

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, your smoker shouldn't "puff and bellow" at all. You're looking for a thin light blue consistent smoke coming out the stack.

To help you out I would ask a few questions.
  1. What temperature are you cooking at? Pellet smokers produce less smoke the higher the temp.
  2. What type/brand of pellets are you using? It does make a difference.
  3. Are you happy with the final product? The final taste is the most important determining factor of whether you have a problem or not.
Many pellet cooking chefs will augment the smoke from the grill with additional smoke, from an AMNPS.

Bottom line: don't give up. Keep trying and let us know other questions which might arise.

It sounds like yours is performing correctly and you dad's controller needs help. As was stated, you don't really want it huffing out smoke all the time. How is the flavor of the food coming off the grill, does it have a decent amount of wood smoke flavor? The pellets really do make a huge difference. Try some Lumber Jack, or Cooking Pellets and see if they don't change the wood flavor on your food from the grill..

+1 on the AMNPS. I have your same model and it doesn't really puff on "high smoke" after it's up to temperature. Adding the smoke tube really upped the quality of the flavor and bark on my cooks.
