I have a Smoke-in it model 1 and have had it for about a year. I went to use it and it would not heat up. I do not know what parts to diagnose or replace. Can any one provide suggestions?

Of course you verified outlet being used has power.
MY #3 that is 4 years old wouldn't turn on the spring, even ordered a new thermostat. Then I went out and tried again and it turned on. Only thing I could think of was that the rheostat was oxidized over winter and that I finally cleaned contacts off when rotating that it started again.
So my suggestion is to turn the rheostat fully of and on 20-30 times. It may start working.

#1 is to make sure your outlet has power and that a breaker or gfci did not trip. Reset if necessary. Still a no-go? Unplug from outlet and proceed as follows.

Next, I would remove the back of the smoker. You will find all the wiring and the temperature cable between the layers of fiberglass insulation. You might want to wear gloves and eye protection. Check all the wiring and make sure the connections are good and tight. Frayed wires/melted wire case repair by cutting off the bad and install new lugs for connection.
Check your power cord with a multimeter (https://www.ehow.com/how_6734694_test-power-cord.html)
You can test you heating element as follows (http://www.appliance411.com/faq/test-element.shtml)

If you bought it new from SI, Steve has you covered with the 3 year warranty if parts are necessary.

I will try this and get back to you on it.

And have you got this smoker working?
the female spade connector downstream of the rheostat had broken. Once I replaced it, it seems to be working just right.

Its a little late in the day to go out to the grocery store, pick up meat and smoke ribs, so that will likely have to wait until next weekend.
