A relocated yankee who has earned some cred in the south!
I moved to Roebuck SC 4 years ago but started learning my smoking skills up in Massachusetts as I got bored with "grilled food".
A friend of mine showed me how he smoked a turkey in a small Weber kettle and I was off from there...
I first used a propane grill with a smoke insert (one of those cast iron boxes) with pellets.
From there I moved onto a Brinkmann water smoker with charcoal but found it to be like a glorified trash can. Although better results than above the thin metal was not kind in the winter for smoking.
I started with a cheap horizontal smoker that did not give good results due to physics and how it was made. I believe it was a Char-Griller. Now I use that just for standard charcoal grill when I have the time or run out of propane gas for the gas grill.
I have since moved onto a Smokin-It Model #2 and find the ease of use and savings on wood a pleasure. I have been using it for 2 weeks with very good results. So far have smoked a chicken, ribs, and sausages in it. I will try a brisket this weekend and next a pork butt for some pulled pork,,,YUM!
