Hey,

I picked up a 18.5 WSM on Craigslist and just got done cleaning one of the grates and wanted to see if it was good to use or not.  As you can see below there is some discoloration (the organish color isn't a reflection) and a few chips/damaged areas.  I haven't cleaned the second one yet, I will probably tackle it tomorrow night.  The last time they had usedthey smoker they did not clean it and based on the cobwebs in the lid it has been a while.

If yall think I should get new grates are their any good alternatives to the weber brand?  I hate to get a good savings on craigslist to throw a lot of it away on new grates.

**Actually just found a decent price for a new upper grate: http://www.grillparts.com/weber/web...Description=Your item&brand=&category=&model=

Thanks,

Chris

I would use them. Some of my grates are worse that that with the searing that I do.

How often do you clean the grate down to being "shiny" again?

Now that I have gotten them nice and clean I will probably do like I do with my 14.5" and get rid of any residue but not worry about doing a deep clean each time.

Those are in really good shape.

IMO, if they hold meat then they are fine to cook on.  A wire brush and then rubbed down with an oil soaked rag or clump of paper towels and we go again.

Agreed.  Unless you're creeped out by what the prior owner may have cooked on them, and if that's the case, the used option wasn't the best route to go.

New ones can be had between $10 & $15, and they don't have to be Weber's, as long as they're 18".
