Later this fall when I make more summer sausage, keibaska and brats I’d like to ship some to family pretty far away.

I’m in SE MO and would be shipping to central PA.

I have insulated boxes frozen dog food was shipped in as well as those thick styrofoam coolers the meat places ship meat in.

If I wait till Dec is dry ice necessary?

USPS? UPS? FedX?

Thanks for the input

I personaly wouldn't risk it. Once it hits a dock and gets offloaded from one truck to another it's inside and above 32*. I doubt the package will stay below freezing from door to door.

I've sent stuff to Ohio . Sent during colder months , I just froze it and sent it UPS in a normal box .
Check the times that the shipping you choose picks up and sends out . Get the stuff up there so it gets picked up and on it's way and doesn't sit overnight on a shelf .

I've also received stuff in the same manner . No issues for me .

If you buy a thick styro shipping box, which itself is inside a cardboard box, and add half a dozen freezer gel packs, it will arrive frozen.
I've shipped frozen food to my family in the mid west from Texas in the heat of summer many times, and other than one episode where they lost the box, they always receive frozen food.
Problem for me anyway, is that since Dejoy ruined the USPS, the cost of shipping has skyrocketed and rapid delivery of a 40lb box is too high to do it now.

I would use the dry ice and well insulated packaging. You would have to figure out whether the freezer packs/gel packs v.s dry ice weight makes a difference as well as the cost of them. You are paying for every pound, so it matters if you care about the money.

I used to order boudin and smoked sausage from Louisiana but the shipping has gotten unaffordable now. I can buy steak and lobster for the final cost of those products shipped to me now. And they wont do regular ground anymore, even in winter. I was always willing to take the risk and always got my stuff at least still partially frozen.

You need to check the shipping services for their estimated transit times, available service tiers and costs.

I wouldnt risk it. I would dry ice it. Shipping in Dec can have weather and volume delays.

If you're shipping frozen chubs of Summer sausage you'll be fine going through UPS .
I've hung chubs post smoke for 7 days at 60 degrees .
Standard ground is 3 days if it gets picked up on the day you drop it off .
