first of all let me start by saying I wasnt sure where to post this.....but here goes...

I have to build a new shed out back for my lawn tools and pool equipment, and I want to build it with a overhang on one side to put my smoker under to protect it from the elements a little more...

I dont have a very big back yard, but I currently have a 6'x6' plastic one, and Im thinking the new one will be about 8'x7' with a 4' "porch" on the end where I will keep the smoker. which leads me to my question...

is there a rule of thumb for the roof over the porch area? do I need to build it so the gable end extends out 4' over the porch area, or should the gable end be in front with just an extension of the roof out front?

if you can picture in your mind, looking at the front it will be 2 doors, on the right side is where the porch will be

You get snow in any amount? If you build it off the side, the slope of the roof would be severely limited. Other than that, as long as you are not creating puddles that remain at the shed/cover interface point... I guess it's all good.

no, not snow...well maybe about an inch or 2 a year...my biggest concern's with building it is 1) keep the smoker out of the rain, and give me a cover to work under...and 20 making sure I dont burn the shed down with the roof being to low...Im estimating the roof to be about 7' tall, and the smoker sits about 4.5' high with the smoke stack on it...

You could get some sheet metal for the lean-to roof over the smoker if yer concerned. Sheet aluminum won't rust. Really, tho...smoker exhaust temps ain't that high. 350 won't burn anything.... and with the free air flow...

what rich said..........plus........with cold weather temps.......make sure you build it on the side AWAY from the winds.......wind steals heat.........

you won't burn anything down with a overhang 7 foot tall

also........what kind of smoker?

horz with sfb?
propane?
letric?
ecb?
