Setting charcoal in kamado

So I have been looking for a topic on how to place the charcoal in my vision for when I am smoking my food to insure consistent temp throughout the cook. Not sure if I just passing it by so I apologize if I am asking the question again. Is it flat across, in a pyramid or around the outside. Thanks in advance for your advice
