My sibs are divided over this question about their ethics. I will shop there to support my local community. The reason that I came to this decision is mainly because of their hiring policies. 2 years ago, I went to Phoenix, AZ for spring trianing baseball, I needed some stuff so I went to Wallyworld. When I went in the front door, I was greeted by 2 quadriplegics in their chairs. I was totally blown away. Over the course of 2 weeks, it was always someone in a wheelchair. Please tell me what other retail co. would do this? Once inside any Wallyworld, employees smile and ask you if you need any help. My local Walmart hires many developmentally challenged poeple. Again who else does this? I support my community, not Asia!

Very well put and this is true in my area too. A lot of those people working for Sam's/Walmart aren't qualified or can't get any other companies to hire them. So the company is actually helping americans put food on their tables that may otherwise be unemployed.

We have a membership to both Sam's and Costco and have had them for years. We have found that both carry a lot of the same brands but the quality at our local Sam's is much better than our local Costco when it comes to meat.

I have been to both. Not alot of difference in meat quality. I buy mainly from Costco. But I do shop the local ad's. If I can get some of the stuff from safeway or Raley's Ill do that and stock up.

I could care less about union or non union. I belong to both Costco and BJ Wholesale. Here is a quick example ribs at Costco $1.99 at BJ Wholesale $1.69, both cryovac. The best place for meats I find to be Restaurant Depot.

I have both Costco & Sams Club membership. For the family and general monthly food stock the wife uses Costco. I use Sams for quicker service, and when they have great deals. The quality of the meat at my local C & S is roughly the same. Our local Sams has started breaking down some of the bulk to smaller more affordable quantities.

As to the politics of buying from either Sam's/Walmart or Costco stores, I can't afford the luxury of being choosy about which store has the best employee or business practices. The reality of Big Mega stores negatively affecting local business and using their clout to wield government favors is not going away. I have lost two jobs due to giant conglomerates buying up smaller entities, so the impact isn't lost on me either. However I have earned the right to choose where to spend my dollar, and if I had extra money to spend to support local enterprise I would if there was either commodity or community value.

Since I like to be an informed shopper when possible, I subscribe to Consumer Reports. You may be interested on a recent price comparison of some popular stores:

Agreed.........and you can get prime grade there too.

I don't know where else you can get prime without a special order.

Without getting too deep into things, a couple historical notes:

Henry Ford recognized that if he paid his assembly line workers a bit more, they could afford the Model T. He paid them more, they bought the car in droves, and this helped fuel the car's popularity thus helping boost Ford's bottom line. In other words, it was a rising tide that truly lifted all boats.

Walmart works the other way: They import the cheapest possible stuff and sell it for the lowest possible price. In order to accomplish this, they must have the leanest and lowest-paid workforce possible. Of course, the less people get paid the more they are forced to shop places like Walmart.
I can think of many cliches to describe that process, but "rising tide" certainly is not one of them.

Funny you should mention Henry Ford.

Henry Ford is the same man who stole the idea for the electric windshield wiper from my wife's great great grandfather. Her gg grandfather presented the concept and idea to Ford. Henry Ford told him that he wasn't interested and then turned around and installed them on his cars and trucks. He fought Ford in a court of law and guess who won?...................go figure.

Well, enough of the politics. Thanks to all who responded. You have helped me make up my mind.

Think meat, John

The winner is........................Sam's Club.

Since the consciences was that there was not a great deal of difference I chose Sam's since it is closer to where I live than Cosco.

Thanks again to all who responded.

Take care, John
