Looking for help with the inside of fire box. the out side I am going to sand a prime then put high heat paint. My question is after I get the rust off of the inside how do stop it from coming back. Do i coat it with oil or what

That is a matter of preference, as to what you coat it with. Some folks have used vegetable oil, and seasoned it like a cast iron skillet. Others have used high temperature paint, to re-coat their box.

I've never used vegetable oil, but the last time I did a sand job on my fire box, and applied the paint, the rust came back pretty quickly.

I have a bucket of olive oil and the day after a smoke I paint the inside with it. everytime. It's not that big a deal and it slows the rust. Also it does not add any contaminates to the smoke chamber.

Another thing step to help fight rust would be to remove the ashes as soon as you can. I generally try to clean out my fire box the next day after a cook.

Is therw anyway to salvage a propane grill that the entire bottom rusted out of?

Chop out the bottom and either rivet or weld in a new piece.   Pretty easy to do if you have or know of someone who has the tools.

First you have to ask yourself if the juice is worth the squeezin'.

Unless that is one heck of a grill, it sounds like its time to go shopping..
