Colorado Mountains
Hello all. My name is Robert and I am in Colorado trying to make good barbecue at my cabin at 9,000 feet.  I am originally from Oklahoma and used a Hasty Bake for 20 years which I was alway able to smoke some great ribs on and make killer steaks.  I have had to retire the Hasty Bake and have been trying to find a good alternative that I can smoke on at high altitude.  I tried a Bradley electric which worked well (for a while) but the flavor was short compared to good Oklahoma barbecue I grew up with.  I also have a Weber Performa which is tough to keep going due to the thin air thus not too good for a long smoke.  I am currently testing out a Landmann propane smoker which I have not been able to control well yet.  I am a feeble amateur at best but my perfect Sunday is to ride my bike in the mountains and cook barbecue for my family.

Hello Robert and welcome to SMF, from another Colorado lady smoker! I know exactly what you are talking about when referring to 9,000 ft altitude...that's approximately the altitude I reside at.

I have an MES40 that runs anywhere from 25-50* cooler than the set temp, which can be challenging on it's own, but I've managed to turn out some pretty good BBQ if I do say so myself.

Anyway, take a look at this for some helpful hints:
