The device I purchased has no damper or baffle plates.  Instead it has an artful 6-5/8"  steel pipe (horizontal chimney) for the smoke and heat coming out of the firebox.  Without any kind of modification the device produces very hot fast moving smoke and uneven heat.

I have used firebricks to deflect the heat

I have used a bent pie pan to deflect and dissipate the heat and smoke

Those two modifications have resulted in uneven heating...but produced a decent product--not great.

Next I will try a round-bottom, stainless steel vacuum chimney cap.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to tame the fast-moving 500F, UN-baffled un-dampered smoke and heat?
