They are good smokers, but are middling searing and grilling pellet grills. Some say the smoke qualities are light on Recteq because they are so consistent, but that is more subjective than anything.
If you want a Pellet grill that does well as a grill also, look for one that exposes the flame. The higher end models like Pitts and Spitts, Mak and Yoder are well known for this option. The Mak and Yoder come standard, the Pitts and Spitts is optional. Less expensive units like PitBoss also have this, so it’s not just something that the more expensive grills have. The Cookshack models are unique in that it has different zones, and some zones are grilling zones and other zones are smoker zones. No need to switch anything on the grill. Just set and cook how you want. The Mak has removable plates that are kept on when smoking, and off when grilling. The Yoder has a trap door (large) that you slide off when you want to grill. The Pitts and Spitts also has a trap door although a bit smaller than the Yoder limiting how much you can grill a bit.
That said, even the best pellet grills struggle to keep up with the grilling performance of a good charcoal grill like a Weber kettle, so some combine these, getting a good smoker and a separate grill. The Mak, Cookshack and Yoder seem to give the best grilling performance out there. They are good dual purpose machines ( not great dual purpose but it’s nearly impossible to do both and offer pellet convenience). The Mak is well documented to offer the best smoke profile ( again this is very subjective) of any pellet grill.
