I've been planning this build since late last Fall. Just had to get the holidays behind me and shake off a case of the Lazy's!

So my plan is a box for use as both a direct heat, live-fire smoker, and a high-heat grill. This type of cooker has become more popular lately. They're basically a variation of pit-barrel cookers - with the benefit of having easy access to the fire/coal bed.

There are a few companies that are selling variations of these cookers. One of the newer companies is Chud's BBQ, and their Chud Box.

Hasty Bake also makes a similar cooker, call the Roughneck.

And Frank Cox of Smokerbuilder.com recently started selling a model called the SmokeSlinger...and I just realized he's now got a smaller version called the Mini SmokeSlinger.

So I'm pulling ideas from all these builders, and coming up with my own version.

It's basically gonna be a steel box that's 24" wide by 24" deep by 32" tall. I'm kinda designing it in my head as I go...but my plan is to have one main cooking grate in the top - somewhere around 24 inches above a slide-out fire/coal basket with an access door. I'm thinking about also putting a second set of rails about 5-6 inches under the main cooking grate...which would allow me to move the coal basket up close to the food for searing/grilling.

That's my basic idea. And now on with the build!

One 4x8 sheet of plate steel will be enough for all the panels in this box.

It's the first time I'm getting to use this new toy. I got a laser level for Christmas. It's making laying out and marking the square panels a breeze.

All 6 panels are cut out and ready to start tacking together.

2 sides, back, and bottom panels tacked together.

That's what I got done today. I think this is gonna be another real fun build!

More to come soon!

Nice Joel, I'm in for the build.
I have seen Bradly use his Chud on his videos and was wondering about it just the other day while watching one.

So these are new to me , so will be fun to watch your build.
Loved your last 2 you did for Jim and Ryan.
So is yours going to be a mini that you mentioned , or reg size.

Nice start . Gonna follow along .

Used several different types when I was working . Been thinking about getting one .
Is that a green beam ? Easier to see . Looks like it shoots a square cross section ?
Can you set it for plumb or level only ?

HaHa...yeah right! I didn't understand the reference - I had to look him up! He's clearly a professional...I'm a total amateur!

And we're off... I'm sitting in the bleachers watching....

Thanks Keith! Looking forward to trying something new this time!

Thank you David!

Yeah I got some ideas from watching a few of his YT videos. He's featured them in a couple builds on his channel.

Mine will be on the smaller side (24"x24"). Bigger than a mini Chud Box, but not nearly as big as those full sized ones.

This one has a red beam - which was a tradeoff for me. Bosch had a laser with the green beam that was about the same money, but it didn't have a locking beam. This one can be used with the self-leveling pendulum to shoot a level line, or lock the beam and you can turn that line on any axis. That's why I've got in setting on the plate with the laser pointed straight down. And yes, it shoots a vertical and horizontal beam simultaneously. So basically, I could line it up where I wanted to lay out my cuts, and it shoots 4 perfect 90* corners at once.

This will be amazing as your last smoker. I am in for sure

Appreciate it Adam!

In like Flint!!

Keith

In for the ride!!

I am in for the ride!

Thanks guys!

Looks good so far. Cowboy Kent also has/sells a similar model you might want to take a peek at. I have no idea how good it is but he uses it in a lot of his videos.

EDIT: It looks like it is just a remodeled Hasty Bake with his logo.

I will watch your build.

That sounds like the right size to see how the smoke and heat work. My address is posted below for the delivery on completion, thank you . :emoji_laughing: 🤠
