Out of curiosity using the supplied probes. How close was the chamber probe temp and meat probe temp?

Since my first cook was spur of the moment, I used one of the probes, set up in a probe clip at grate level.
It ran within 2* of the controlers main temp readout . Until I have more time to test this grill, I'm happy with those temp offsets. The app seems fairly well thought out as well.

So far so good with me. I just wish I could get a little more smoke into the meat on shortish cooks
Is there a trick to it?

Thank you.
Dan

I like to use the smoke tube with combination of pellets and chips. This is a pulled ham I did couple days ago.

Brian, that looks abso'freak'in'lutely delicious!!!
If I can find Lumber Lumber Jack pellets around here, I'm gonna load up on straight hickory, and straight oak pellets. They really helped the smoke flavor using my old Camp Chef pellet pooper.

Have you tried making a smoke bomb using chips and chunks, and placing it on the heat defector plate over the fire pot? I used to do that on my C.Chef.
I also sometimes add 1 bricket of charcoal to my smoke bombs, to give to that grilled over charcoal flavor, and to help with the smoke ring,
it works.
I need to make one of those pulled hams, they look and sound KILL'er!!!

Thanks a bunch.
Dan.

I have found both to be quite accurate. I went down a rabbit hole on the chamber probe, its some fancy kind which I forget now. I talked it out with RecTeq and they assured me it was working good. I was comparing the chamber probe to a thermoworks spot probe.

What I learned was: if its working stop fussing. Its working.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say most people who own a Recteq don’t trust the probes. I’m one of them. It’s not expensive to get an accurate probe from thermoworks, just depends how picky you are about exact temps. And unless they put another hamster in the server, notifications on busy weekends will result in overcooked meats because they’re just overwhelmed and your notifications are delayed.
For more smoke run it on Lo for an hour or so at the beginning of the cook.

My unit temp probe is spot on….i do clean it regularly though, the meat probs work great till they don’t, it get pinched or wet then they are dead…..I’ve been getting about 2 years out of the meat probs. I have been using my RFX probes more these days…..just too easy!

I will most likely get a set of the rfx pretty soon, I've been eyeballing them for a while now.

The meat probes on mine are very close. Like mentioned above the app can lag on busy days, but when it starts to get close to target I pay more attention to the grill itself. The pit is close enough. If you think about how the grill operates there is a little more react time fluctuating. But in the grand scheme of things pretty accurate.

RFX system is great. They can be set to report at different intervals, extremely accurate and are dishwasher safe. Used mine again yesterday while smoking Dino bones.

I have a R.e.c.t.e.q BYB1200, i use the probes occasionally. You CAN calibrate them within the controller on your machine. Its very simple. Use ice cubes in water to see where the probes read, should be 32 degrees, if they`re off, calibrate them within the controller.

My BYB1200 always stays at the temp that i set it. Best cooker i`ve ever owned.

Ive never heard or experienced any of this about the probes.

Its not that big of a wide spread problem as some make it seem. Its usually just a re-calibration process that fixes most of the probe issues. Sometimes they arrive not always perfectly calibrated. Sometimes ya just get a bad probe(s). I`ve also seen where the female jack where you plug the probes into the controller, had a connection issue that is easily fixed by just moving the male end of the probe around within the controller and watch the readout on the controller until the temps look normal and have good connections. Or that both probes match pretty close. Its not a big deal.

We live in a world where everything is suppose to be 110% perfect because we paid some money out of our wallets. The real truth is, nothing is perfect in an unperfect world. Until people get use to it, they`ll just stomp their feet and scream bloody murder until somebody pays attention to them. And if not, they start bashing the brand.

3 shipments before I had enough good pieces to put together one grill. Igniter replacement every 18 months. I wouldn’t call that being whiny. I just use a thermowoks smoke ( pretty affordable) for instant notifications. I quit using the app. I know some people get lucky and everything works right from day one. I wasn’t that lucky. It’s still a good smoker, but with some quirks.

They know you, they were sending you the garbage ignitors, lol. In all honesty, every company puts out shit, it just depends on how much of it is making it out the door without more sample inspection numbers. My RT BYB1200 has been spectacular. A great friend of mine, has the RT DB800, and has run every time 100% flawlessly. So i dunno... there`s garbage everywhere. Some folks are lucky, some ain`t. But nobody makes a 100% perfect product. Not on this planet anyways. No matter which way you slice it, gonna be complainers/whiners wherever. There are more happy RT owners, than not. That can be said about ANY brand.

Over the years here on SMF, Recteq IMO has had little negative reports vs all the others combined. Yup, nobody is perfect and that certainly doesn't help the very few that have had issues with their unit. Based upon what I've read here on SMF, Recteq appears to be above most other brands.

I have a 1070, it was quickly discontinued. I don’t think it was produced for more than a year. Once I got a heavy duty cover made for it, it overcame most of the design flaws. It’s pretty solid now, shouldn’t need to replace it anytime soon, it was the only all stainless model at the time.
Edit: I was on a Recteq only site, you could call it a fan club even, but that didn’t mean there were no complaints. That’s probably why I’ve heard more complaints than many of you.

As a side note the 1070 was effectively a copy of the Memphis Wood Fire Grill (I had it for 10ish years) and it was a great grill. I think they dropped the 1070 due to the price point and it was a one off so more $$ to make. I almost got one but the 1250 at the time called me.....

Cool info, thanks!
