Am I the only one getting fed up with all the "cooking" sites that are more or less obviously AI slop. My wife asked me to turn some salmon into lox for her. After a bit of research, mostly thanks to the posters here, I figured out what she really was asking for was nova lox. Okay, I can make that. I've got the tools and the ingredients at hand.
But then I thought, why not try and make it a bit better. Last summer she had bagels and lox from a genuine New York City deli, so I've got to top that. So I start doing research and quickly realized, something is off. Sometimes slightly, other times massively. And I realized, there was a lot of AI slop. So to share my frustration and hopefully give a few laughs, I have some high(low) lights below from sites that annoyed me until I realized how much AI slop is out there.
Please note: DO NOT attempt to use any recipes from the sites below, one calls Morton Tender Quick and kosher salt interchangeable. Also, I've removed the .com from the site names because I don't want to post links to the sites and to prevent accidental clicks on such wretched hives of scum and villainy.
The absolute worst offender/best laugh was https://quickestrecipes /morton-tender-quick-recipes/. It has this lovely photo.
I can only assume that some truth in advertising law triggered this, as moron seems an accurate description of the site.
Next up was https://www.meatluxe /cold-smoked-salmon/. I found the recipe wording a bit odd. And it got odder the deeper into the recipe I went, until I got to this picture of the cold smoked salmon still smoking.
At which point I did what I should have started with and looked at the "About Me" photo. Poor Sophie was born with only 3 fingers on her right hand.
And then I came across https://www.simplymeatsmoking /recipes/cold-smoked-salmon/ and realized I couldn't tell how legitimate it was but it gave me funny vibes. Then I realized I'd probably never find the salmon trout they seem to prize for their recipe.
However, I thought, "I don't know that much about salmon or trout beyond the fact they are related species. Maybe there is something out there called a salmon trout." So I searched for salmon trout. And every site on the first two pages of results tried to inform me of the difference between salmon and trout, except one. It gave me the whole run down on the salmon trout. Good old https://tatnuckmeatandsea /fresh-meat/fish/salmon/what-is-salmon-trout/ had it all. But it was weirdly written, again. So I searched for Tatnuck Meat and Seafood and found https://www.telegram.com/story/business/2024/03/26/tatnuck-meat-seafood-closing/73111232007/. The legit company seems to have gone out of business about a year before they posted about the elusive salmon trout.
At that point I pretty much gave up. So if you have any funny or frustrating encounters with AI in your quest for knowledge I'd love to hear them.
