I told my wife a day or so before Christmas that if I didn't get a Thermapen for Christmas then I would just buy one myself. Low and behold my in-laws got me the back-lit Thermapen! It even came with a little baby Thermapen, so now I have two!!!
But that was just the beginning.
My wife comes to me on Friday and says "I'm going to start the low-carb diet again, and I think you should do it with me." I'm not particularly interested. Heck, I make bean-to-bar chocolate and other candies in my spare time, and I drink Pepsi like it's going extinct, so this would be pretty rough. But I want to support her in her dieting, and then she says "Since my friend and I have set a goal and will reward ourselves if we meet it, if you want to do the diet too, then we will get your reward, a meat slicer, now!" At that point I have little-to-no choice in the matter. I do really want a new meat slicer. I've been using the one that my in-laws gave me that is close to 30 years old and made mostly of plastic. So we ordered this Sanven 10".
While researching we take a look at a restaurant supply place, and while their slicers were too expensive, we found that we could get pork bellies (mmmm... bacon!) for a little over $2/lb, whereas I'm paying $3.99/lb on sale at Ranch 99. The only catch is that we have to buy 30lb of it. We skipped it for now, mostly because we simply had nowhere to put it.
I also got some Best Buy GCs for Christmas and they have some kitchen stuff. Most notably, and the thing I bought, they have the Kitchenaid food grinder attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer! Now I want to make my own pepperoni sticks!
Next we go to Sam's Club to get supplies for my pepperoni among other things, and we happen to walk past the freezers. We've been talking about getting a freezer for the garage for a couple of years now... but the timing was just right this time. We got a 7.1cf freezer! Now I have a place to store those 30lbs of pork belly and whatever other kinds of meat I want to stock up on!
I am ramping up my equipment... now... how to get her to agree to a bigger smoker? ;-)
