I am thinking of making UDS smokers for sale to the public after I get a great design. I already have a good one that works. My question to everyone is : Do you think a well built UDS will go over in the public? I know about the research and marketing, but I never see them anywhere and they might go over well.

We have a monster sized flea market near by and there is no question these things would sell.    With some planning and a little capital someone could make a go of it.

On craigslist in St. Louis area they sell for $225 or more
I will post a link so you can see what they offer and different prices.
That will give you a starting point to work off of .

Here one, first time seeing it. $500 ? Way to much.
I will see if I can find some other ones

  9. yeh i think $500 is a bit much...they go for about $250 here in oklahoma. lotta ppl make them here and they charge anywhere from $200-$250, i have never seen them higher than that.

I found a local place that I can get good used barrels for $ 40 that come with a lid. After doing a prototype of my own ( needs some adjustments) I believe I have around $100-$130 in it. So say $130 and $40 isn't bad if I can get between $200-$250. I just really believe if people saw these things in a home improvement store then they would take off. I am going to make about four more after I get mine dialed in and see what happens as for maybe selling to friends and maybe a website after a few sales.

Any ideas or recommendations are appreciated.

If I can get a decent barrel which I started with then it took me about 10 hours. That is after I did two burns. Now mind you this isn't with finished paint, just four coats of high temp paint from a can.

Here is my prototype build. I didn't use the 1'' nipple on the bottom. I used replacement Weber vents. Three around the bottom which I know now is overkill.

Hey brother , nice UDS . I think the reason no one saw these , is because you posted them as an add on to an older thread. If you repost these pix as a new thread in , say , the UDS. Forum...you will find people looking at them. I only stumbled over these because I was hopping around looking at thread I don't normally look at.
Anyway , good luck with that barrel smoker , man. Post some pix when ya get some meat goin in there.:grilling_smilie:

  17. yes I kooked your pictures.

find no big changes than normal uds.

  18. The pics didn't show in the thread. Please repost and I will gladly take a look.

Can you upload pics from saving them on your computer or use photobucket?    It makes it much easier for folks to see your pics when they don't have to click on individual links.

I did click and saw your pictures, one thing i noticed is that you'll have problems with airflow to your charcoal basket...with just having those holes the ash will most likely clog it up pretty quickly.
