A Diagram of the Pledge

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Seems simple and straightforward to me, yet apparently some have trouble fathoming it's implications, so let's have a deeper look-

"I pledge"- A pledge is a solemn promise or agreement to do or refrain from doing something; something given or regarded as a security. A pledge is not something to be taken lightly. In legal use it is a binding agreement to uphold a condition or position. When you pledge something, you do it or you are not worth your own word. And if not worth that... what ARE you worth?

"allegiance"- the loyalty of a citizen to his or her government; loyalty or devotion to some person, group, cause, or the like. It is a promise to conform to the rules, customs and laws of the entity you swear allegiance to. It is a strong word, implying you are again bound to what you are pledging to- which is-

"to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands"- Not JUST a Flag, a PARTICULAR Flag. You are renouncing any other flag... and allegiance to any other country or government. You are willing to be known as an AMERICAN. Not a Whatever-American. An American. Where in America we speak English <roughly>. Where we remove our hats and place our hands over our hearts for the Pledge and the Star Spangled Banner. Where we tolerate other races whom abide by our customs and laws. Where everyone, while abiding our customs and laws, should be treated equally. I admit this has taken some hits, what with "Affirmative Action" and other rather prejudicial programs, but the premise is intact.

"one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."-
I really hate the thought that this phrase of the Pledge can be misconstrued. It's fairly plain... ONE nation- yet diverse in it's makeup. It's the melting pot of the World, people. And what comes out of the pot? A mixture of all...but as one product. An alloy of the separate ingredients, which is not divisible into it's components any longer. Indivisible, and stronger than any one of it's components. And Liberty and Justice for ALL. ALL who prescribe to the previous conditions of the Pledge. Not ALL as in anyone. Liberty and Justice must be earned by people wanting to be considered citizens. Earned by loyalty- allegiance- to the republic who would grant such broad rights to ALL of it's citizens. And on top of it all- God. "One Nation under God". "Certain unalienable God-given rights" <paraphrased>. I'm not much of a theologian, but again, I think one can understand this statement intuitively. Refer to a text known as "The Ten Commandments" if there's any questions.

So, next time you recite the Pledge, think on the promise you are making- under God- and to the Nation- and to your fellow citizens. And to all considered together- The United States of America. Keep true to your word, to your pledge, to your country, and to God... and make this great nation even better- for all.

Thanks WD. We all need this kind of reminder once in awhile. I miss old Red too. Every Saturday evening growing up, either before or after the Honeymooners.

AAaaahhh, Red Skelton, how I used to enjoy him! A wonderfull man with a great sense of showmanship! And yes, I've seen this pledge before, and oh how I wish more would remember it!

We as a country need to step back in time about 50 years or so and start over, we have lost or given away so much that should never have been forgotten. Freedom isn't free, but lets not give it away trying to stay free. Sometimes makes me sad thinking of how our children are loosing sight of the way things should be.

We can only hope, that the future will correct itself and see what it is missing.

Amen over and over...

God Bless America and those serving Her and Her people.
