Can I use a single 30” pipe for both the chamber and firebox and have it in a straight line? Thanks for any help!

I don't know about in-line/straight thru. All the ones I have seen were off-set one way or the other unless you are looking at a weber smokey mountain style. So here are a few ideas for you:

I don't totally understand your plan - but I learned from my home built that a vertical pipe will drip condensation onto whatever is below.

Yes you can cut a hole where the firebox ends and pit starts cut a c shape on top slide a square plate thru the slot you cut at the desired hole size you want ...weld in place ..
