Im a huge Pink Floyd fan......always have been.  Most Floyd fans will hate me for saying this but I absolutely LOVE the Final Cut (the album that broke the camels back) but listening in sound dampening headphones it's a really well done and beautifully Roger Waters Album.

Now I have run across these 2 covers......and they (in my opinion) are really good.  One is SPOT ON and the other is a very different female take on a classic.  Figured Id let ya listen and see what you think as well.

Enjoy

Hey Scott...A really big Floyd fan myself! You're right...both of these are very good! The Great Gig cover is almost like listening to The Dark Side live! I'm not familiar with the lady that covers Comfortably Numb...but I like it. Thanks for turning me on to her...I'll be downloading some of her stuff for sure, especially that cover. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the link- Really is an awesome tune, whole album w/o a doubt one of the greatest of all time. Interesting, it doesn't have that little anomaly at the end of The Great Gig that's on the original album- a momentary slight change in tape speed. I almost miss it!!

Time for some tunes and smoke!!

Can't leave out "PIGS"

Big Floyd Fan here too!!

Check these guys out, they call themselves "Wish You Were Here"  http://www.floydtribute.com/

Some local Ohio guys that have been doing this for close to 30 years.   We try to see them every time they are in town.

Just about as real Floyd you can still get.

Here is another Cover Band that has toured in the US.  Brit Floyd, pretty good sound.

So do you like the Final Cut album?  One of my favs

Not my favorite album (that would be The Wall), but I like it. IMO there's not a bad Floyd album, although I never cared much for that early stuff with Syd Barrett. That was a bit too psychedelic for my tastes.

Yeah I agree.  I have to be a certain mood for the Syd Barrett stuff.   I'm a Roger Waters fan as far as lyrics and such go.....but there is no one that plays guitar like Gilmore.

I noticed the lack of the tape speed change as well.  Maybe that;s how they made it their own?

If there was a movie highlighting my life from age 13-21, the soundtrack would be almost exclusively Pink Floyd. Several significant milestones passed into the rearview mirror to the moody chords of Gilmour's Stratocaster and Waters' delightfully perplexing lyrics.
I saw them live a couple times. The best was RFK stadium in July of '87. I think that's when it was anyway. They were long past their prime according to most, but that show will forever live as one of the greatest rock and roll events of my life. Maybe it was the second row seats. Maybe it was the girl. Maybe it was the the nagging inkling in the recesses of my brain that the carefree days of my own youth were on the wane, and moments like that wouldn't come around too often from then on. There is a video of that same tour I've watched a couple times, but there's just no way to capture the magic of that July afternoon.

As for the covers, the brain damage cover was pretty cool. Didn't really like the Comfortably Numb one, but that's just me.

I was lucky enough to live in L.A. and saw The Wall live.  Man such a GREAT concert.   I absolutely love the movie The Wall as well and will put it on from time to time and crack the volume.

Scott, i was always a big floyd fan too. never saw them live. I have an unusual Floyd story. When i lived in NJ in the princeton area, the band was promoting a concert , and were flying in a Pink blimp. I was in the backyard and this blimp was flying/hovering directly above my back yard while i was outside and came down really low. I was in the 8th grade when the Wall Came out I think. I would not say the Final Cut was my favorite album, it's hard to say any one album was my favorite, although i probably watched the wall more than 100 times, there is plenty of other stuff i have listened to just as much if not more. I cant think of any other band that was really similar.

Very nice thread.

So I was not old enough in the hey days of the 70's and did not understand in the early 80's, but I did find the amazing experience of being blissfully numb listening to the tranquil sounds coming from my speakers as I burned my candles and the natural herbs we grew in the garden in the mid 80's. Oh the days of no responsibility or cares.........

I was able to collect, import and find all of their officially realeased albums on cd up to 91'. Then I met a girl, the girl moved in, the girl moved out, all of my cd's disappeared and was heart boken that I had lost all of my music. I moved on from the girl, but the pain still lives in my heart from my music loss........ I have been able to replace some, but still have the holes....

I like the covers. Thank you for sharing. Yes covers are not the same as the original, but sometimes can give you a diffrent perspective on something. I am drawn to covers because of just that. It fits into my cooking style. I like to take something and put a twist on it, to make it my own and hopefully make it better or as good, but diffrent.

This is not a cover, but it is in my opinion a great mix a talented DJ has done with two incredible bands music.

On another note: I have seen on my Facebook like of Pink Floyds page. There has been chatter of them releasing a new album soon.

I think "The Final Cut" may be my favorite of all of their albums, but then I love most of them.

One of the things I love about "The Final Cut" is the incredible 3-D effect the engineers got. For a "Rock" album, its a mind-blower when heard on a truly good sound system that has good spatial imaging. So much of it just sounds like it's coming from locations far outside of the listening room, and certainly not from the speakers themselves. This is particularly rare from the (usually poorly miked) rock productions which are often very "muddy" as far as spatial imaging goes.

It was probably done with some cheesy phase modifying trickery, but whatever, it seems pretty incredible, so I'd rather believe that it was just a product of good, clean, simple miking, and keeping the phase information accurate. Don't burst my bubble, please! :)

And of course, it's also musically great and emotionally wrenching. Just a masterpiece, and an album that meant a lot to me when it came out. It's one of those albums that can bring tears to your eyes the way some classical performances can.

Now I need to drag out that CD and hear it again!

Tabbed in.
