Why are all of these things made to read Cel. and not Fer.

If you use or know of one that reads in Fer. can you please post a link to it?

Thank you.

Just starting down the PID path, so I'm of zero help when it comes to which brands work with Fahrenheit, but I'll posit that most are built using Celsius is because it's the standard for most of the world outside the US, and pretty much anything in the scientific and industrial realm.

Do I prefer my stuff to use Freedom Units instead of 'never landed on the moon' units? Yes. Plus, I'm too dang old to learn whether 27 degrees is too hot, or too cold, or whatever... but if I can get a PID that will turn my MESs into proper smoking boxes, I'll google up a cheat sheet and laminate it to hang out in my smoker tool kit.

I believe the REX C-100 can display fahrenheit. JC in GB JC in GB uses it for the PIDs that he builds.
If the controller isn’t locked, you can change the display from C to F and tailor the control range of the unit among other things. The last few controllers I purchased were all locked and you need the lock code to be able to make changes.

There are a few out there, I think one has been suggested. I think many are C only because they are all made overseas and are used for many different applications.
I've used the MyPIN T4A and it does F or C as well. Another good PID option that works.

I've used various brands of these and all have been able to be switched to Fahrenheit. The exact method varies somewhat, but it is selected from a different setup menu than the one where you set P, I, D, and others. You will need to press two buttons (set plus left or up,) and hold them for a few seconds. Then possibly a lock code needs to be set, then the parameters can be scrolled through, though names or codes vary. One of them will switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit. The instruction manual that comes with it may help, or possibly not. Google if it doesn't.

The forum member that gifted me one of his home build units is pretty well versed with these things. He/ JC in GB JC in GB said that these units were locked out, and they couldn't be changed, so I'm sure he looked into it.

Having to look at a conversion chart every time I want to check the smoker temp is unappealing to me, so I will most likely order the unit that tallbm tallbm recommended. It's only money, right? :emoji_laughing:

Thank you guys very much.

The first units I ordered were not locked so customizing them wasn't an issue. I don't know when that changed but it really messed up my set up for these controllers. I really liked them as they were inexpensive and widely available.

If I can get the unlocked ones again in the future, I will let you all know. Sadly disappointing I must say.

I'm guessing you have everything else (SSR, Heatsink, Enclosure, etc.)?
If not then I bet you can find a MyPin T4A with all that included. Just wanting to check so you get things all situated at once :D

I do, JC was kind enough to send me a completed unit as a gift, minus the fan, which I already purchased. Which was a complete surprise too me, thanks again JC.

I had already bought most everything to build my own with his guidance, but I felt pretty overwhelmed with the idea of doing it, I suck with electrical stuff, it's like speaking Chinese to me. So the plan is to swap out controllers with the one that you linked to me, then put together one as a back up, using JC's as a road map, that way I will have a back up if one dies in the middle of a comp again, like my last Guru did, what a scramble that was day was. I thought I completely choked, but to my surprise I took first in ribs.

I really appreciate all the help you guys have been, it really means a lot too me.
In the past, I would've just ordered up a new completed unit, but being retired now, and just buying a new house, money is much tighter.

Thanks again.

JC is a class act for sure!

You'll get this up and running and though the new PID might be slightly different it should be so similar you can get it down :D

Hahaha, I've never used this type of PID before, so I'm sure there will be a learning curve for me. I hope it doesn't fight me too hard, I'm not real good with stuff like this.

When I picked it I think it was because it was known for working well, manual and directions were easy to follow, and it was not difficult to use. All core wins that make life easier with this stuff :D
