I don't know about the wood, but persimmon pudding sure takes me back. I know persimmons also attract swarms of deer. Venison smoked over persimmon has a nice ring to it.
 
Your right about the deer I find them under the bigger trees eating the fallen fruit and I will smoke some deer next season with persimmon
