Has anybody ever used pecan shells instead of wood?  My mom always talks about how my dad use to use pecan shells because one of his clients owned a pecan orchard and he got them for free.  I have been tempted to recreate the old man's magic but have gotten mixed reviews when I talk to people about it.

They should work fine. I think any nut shell is good for smoking and pecan perhaps the best.

I use peanut shells regularly for my fish and chicken and I think the shells hold some nut oils that really add some wonderful flavor.

I always keep some handy when smoking beef or pork roasts too. Sometimes my MES stops smoking because well, I forget to add more hardwood chips and as I add the new chips I toss in some peanut shells with them. The peanut shells will make smoke much sooner and helps fill the gaps.
