When I smoke, I always use 2 thermometers.  I prefer the Taylor 1470 digital thermometer because it's simple and accurate.

I just bought the Redi Chek ET-732 thermometer because it's highly recommended on this site.

Right now I have a 10lb Boston Butt smoking in my MES. The unit is set at 225 degrees.  Both Thermometers are correctly reading that the internal temperature of the meat is at 176 degrees. But the ET-732 is reading that the internal temperature of the oven is at 261 degrees. Its about 4:00 AM a few hours ago, the ET-732 was giving a false reading of 288 degrees in the oven. This is obviously incorrect since the MES can only get to 275 degrees.

This is the first time that I'm using the ET-732 but I'm wondering why it's giving false readings for the temperature of the oven. Is this a common problem. Lord knows, I don't want to be smoking meat at 261 - 288 degrees.

Thank you!

Though I do not know the root cause, I too have had some interesting readings from my ET73 from time to time.  Possibly a temp probe about to go.
