Hey everyone, I’m looking to build a small smokehouse to try cold and hot smoking. If I use pine to build the frame and pine to enclose it will it be okay? Many say cedar but being that it is pricey and pine is a fraction of the cost will it suit my needs and get the job done? I know it’s been discussed before on here but I’ve never read a definitive answer and would like to know before I dive into my new project. Thanks in advance!

You will be fine. Since the wood is not being burned, it won't affect the flavor of the food.
If you want to use cedar, get fence pickets and run them through a planer. They look incredible and have the weather resistance of cedar.

"Other woods low in BTUs are gums, spruces, cedars and pines. These woods burn quickly, but do not sustain any high output of heat. Flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which something will burn. In the case of wood that temperature is 572 degrees Fahrenheit or 300 degrees Celsius. " You will be fine!

I thought of something else you probably already considered. Make sure you don't use treated wood, OSB or particle board. They contain chemicals that may give off nasty gasses when heated to high temps.

Thank you!!! I have the frame almost finished, trying to determine what to use on the outside to enclose it and for the roofing.
