I decided today that I want a smoker for my birthday this summer and want to get plenty of research done before I convince my husband of the investment. I'm an avid griller and slow-cook (for what it's worth) with what I've got. But I'm ready to take the next step. We live in Northwest Ohio, I'm a teacher/athletic director with summers off and my husband is a farmer. I know this isn't something that some random home cook picks up like any other technique and that it is more of a process that can take years to perfect. I'm ok with that, ready to learn, and start with a decent beginners level home smoker. I'm not looking to preserve meats, just BBQ up some chicken, ribs, pork shoulder, and sausage.

I would recommend two products.  For simplicity, I would go with a Masterbuilt electric smoker.  They can be found at Bass Pro or Cabelas.  They have a thermostat and will hold temp great.   If you just have to burn something, then consider going with a Weber Smokey Mountain (18 inch).  There are many websites that carry these and the price varies widely.  The cheapest I ever found was $299 delivered.  They will go 15 hours on half a bag of charcoal and hold temp pretty well as long as the wind isn't strong.

Welcome!

I started off almost 3 years ago on a used(once) $20 charcoal Brinkmann Smoke 'N Grill aka El Cheapo Brinkmann.  I had as much fun as frustration with that thing.  I am now using one of the Masterbuilt Electric Smokers.  It is almost as easy to use as a crock pot, IMHO.  I have the MES 30, but would have gone with the larger MES 40 if I bought it myself.  Alas, I got it as a (much appreciated)gift.  Many MES owners(myself included) use it in conjunction with this smoke generator(http://www.amazenproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AMNPS5X8).  Good luck with your research!  You have come to the right place.

Don't forget to post your first smoke with pictures!
