After 2 years of lurking I finally joined in May. Was looking for a good used smoker. Have an ECB and it was like trying to smoke on an open fire compared to what I have now.
Was looking for a smoker and gave up. Started looking for a welder. A lot of people are trying to retire by selling their old cracker box welder on CL. It ain't pretty but I can stick weld but $250 for a stick welder. Not in my lifetime. Gave up looking for a welder and just stated wishing when I was looking at the smokers on CL. A lot of people are also trying to retire by asking for incredible sums of money for rusted and burned out smokers, 55 gallon barrels and used propane tanks. Sheez!!
Yesterday I opened up CL and the first listing was a BassPro 16" Classic Smoker - $450. Another one of those 1/8 or stamped steel smokers I thought. Already have scrap metal on the patio, didn't need another one, but what the hey, I checked out the BassPro smokers. Horizon smokers they sell, 1/4" thick metal. I emailed and had that pig on the back of my truck in about 2 hours and headed home also with a brand new in the bag still custom cover and a bunch of wood he threw in.
It was pretty nasty inside for only being 18months old. I fired it up and there was what can best be described as asphalt tar on the lid - really thick and gooey. I don't think he knew what he was doing. Fired it up and scraped it off. Not as big as I wished for but it's light years ahead of what I had.
Have 2 chickens and a butt roast on it right now.
