Looks like I will buy a MES 40" Electric Digital Smoker. Went back and forth between propane and electric. Electric seems simpler and more controllable.  Have a charcoal smoker so not total newbie. Found a lot of answers in the Forums which are great. Still, a couple of questions.
  1. If I did go propane how long does 20lb tank last? (Just in case I change my mind)
  2. Plan to use a AMNPS. Since it is perforated where does the ash go?
  3. Can you use AMNPS and the stock chip tray for variety or more smoke?
  4. Sounds like it can't get wet.  Negative versus propane?
  5. Should I really buy a Maverick 732? Of course I can use it on my charcoal and gas grills as well, correct?
That should do it for now.

Thanks

Joe

  1. If I did go propane how long does 20lb tank last? (Just in case I change my mind) I average over 40 hours on a tank on my GOSM .
  2. Plan to use a AMNPS. Since it is perforated where does the ash go? The ash pretty much just stays in the AMNPS until you dump it out.
  3. Can you use AMNPS and the stock chip tray for variety or more smoke? ? Sorry I don't have an electric.
  4. Sounds like it can't get wet.  Negative versus propane? I have read that but you can get covers, I have a cover for my GOSM and water has never been an issue.
  5. Should I really buy a Maverick 732? Of course I can use it on my charcoal and gas grills as well, correct? I think a good therm is a must and the Mav with 2 probes really makes things easy, being able to monitor smoker and meat temps from inside the house is really nice. My Mav is probably the best thing I've bought.
That should do it for now.

Thanks

Joe
One other thing, the AMNPS doesn't work very well with propane without some technical modifications to the smoker, but I have been reading good things with Todd's new tube smoker and propane.
