Newb from Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Hi everyone! I've been browsing these forums for many months and have acquired some great information. I am here reading several times a week. My fiance thinks I need to go to therapy for my "meat porn" obsession. LOL

Anywho, just wanted to poke my head in and say hello. I have been smoking meat for about 3 years, but still consider myself to be a newb. I started out with a vertical electric smoker that my late father had to have about 20 years ago, which he never used. When he died, I found it in his garage still new in the box. I made some really good brisket on that thing. I have a friend who has a WSM 18.5" and he smoked some ribs in it one day. Three days later, I ordered a WSM 22.5" and have been loving it ever since.

Also, I grew up grilling on a gasser, but since I started using a charcoal smoker, I sold my brand new gas grill to my mom and started using my fiance's Weber Kettle. No way will I ever go back to gas again. I never have to worry about flare-ups with the Weber like I did with the gas grill. I grill on average about 4 times a week when it's nice out and once a week or so in the winter months.

I found this discussion while googling smoking classes near cedar rapids, iowa. I have also been searching for local clubs and have been thinking about starting one much like the local beer nuts group that is into home brewing. Do you know of any around cedar rapids?

I'm not aware of anything local around here, but would be interested in getting one together. My buddy and I just competed for the first time and had a blast!

Sounds fun! I have recently started researching smokehouses. I have been wanting to build one in my backyard. I have a pretty good idea on how it will look, but i need to get a blueprint going. I'm not so much of a handyman but have just started in researching it getting ideas at this point. I have a few buds that are really into smoking around cedar rapids and we have been wanting to get something going.
