Was checking out brands and cost of pellets and have a couple questions. Home Depot had very little pellets of any kind but Lowe's had a lot of Pit Boss pellets. They have a 40 lb bag of Pit Boss Competition Pellets for 15.00 and a 20 bag of apple for 10.00. First how about the quality of Pit Boss Pellets and second whats Competition Pellets? Third why the great price on the 40 lb bag? I have been a Kamado smoker for several years and quite frankly had a hard time distinguishing the difference between the different woods! Is there a big difference in the different woods in pellet smoking?

I think because the Apple pellets are 100% apple wood vs. the Competition being a blend of different woods.

I don't think the pitboss has any 100% flavor woods, they are all blends but may be stepping up and making some now

I didn't think they did either and I'm still not sure. But when I looked up their apple pellets it says this. So the first sentence says Blend but then go on to say "feature 100% all natural applewood", so who knows. I'm pretty convinced it's a blend. Don't know why it's so hard to just say what woods are used.

"Pit Boss Apple Hardwood Pellets are the go-to blend for your all your smoking needs. The flavor is mild and fruity with a subtle sweetness that tastes best with poultry, pork, seafood, and lamb. Pit Boss Apple Hardwood Pellets feature 100% all natural applewood are free from added scents, sprays, chemicals, or glues."

I wonder if it's because the woods are not desirable for some reason, like not flavorful or used to smoke often. When you think about it, it has to be a fuel source, as well as add flavor. So part might be solely for fuel purposes. Just guessing.

If you read the hickory it says pretty much the same thing,a play on words imo

I agree. Sounds like they are being intentionally misleading. I guess it means the apple wood in their blends is 100% natural. Apple is expensive, no way they are selling 100% apple for that little $$.
